The 2019 Sanriku Disaster Risk Reduction and Reconstruction Project - Road Trips on the Sanriku Coast of Iwate

The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami struck the Pacific coast of Japan in 2011. The Sanriku coast, which is the name for the coast of Iwate Prefecture, was one of the areas affected by this natural disaster.
As part of our reconstruction, new roads were built to make the area safer and support the local economy. Those roads, called “Reconstruction Roads,” have made it much quicker to get to the coastal areas, meaning it’s that much easier for you to visit Sanriku.
The Sanriku Coast is home to the Sanriku Fukko National Park as well as some of the best scenery in the country. The coastline also boasts delicious seafood and various local cuisines. Those participating in this project can use a special “passport” to easily enjoy the best dishes in Sanriku and the rest of Iwate.
We’ve also made a digital stamp rally and a bunch of sample routes so you can have the time of your life in Iwate.
Enjoy your Iwate road trip!
